Fat's Waller - Don't Give Me That Jive (kirkby-Waller) REGAL ZON OA068812

Fat's used this at one stage for his theme for his Radio programme. (which was fascinating, largely because of his humorous adlibs with the announcer)!!

Doesn't the Guitar "shine" on this, Far better than the muddy versions on CD I think.

Oscar Rabin - Blue Skies (Berlin) REGAL ZON DR5110

Oscar Rabin - Blue Skies (Berlin) REGAL ZON DR5110

What you might ask. This is about as appealing as "Victor Sylverster's Dance Discs"

BUT, These guys played the "Charts" as written. No ad libs or musical gubbins anywhere.

so I think they are very, very important. Because, Just think some young fellow is getting into jazz/swing whatever and hears say charlie Parker or somesuch blowing his natural top on "Blue Skies" He might be amazed or think its kinda twee. But remember He's never heard a "straight" version of the song... Ever.. and is unlikely too as well. so How can he appreciate all the other versions of this song. quite simply he can't.. not without hearing it played "straight" and then hearing what his fav muso does to it. Get my drift?

I have loads of these and will post one every know and then.. I hope you too may now appreciate your own version of "blue skies" a little better after hearing this.

The Three Suns - March Of The Cards (fain) HMV E1-VB-1182

I have a few three suns 78's and they are pretty laid back and cool.. the 78's are much better than (in my option) than the LP's they released in the 50's - 60's
and yes thier "theme" song was Sunrise Serenade Written by Frankie Carle (of whom I have many 78's of)

Hammond
Guitar
Accordion

Ive only seen two CD's of thier work from the 78rpm era, and they wernt very good. I have quite a few more from the Fab three!

Metronome All Stars - One O'clock Jump HMV OA060332

What A line up, One of the annual Metronome All Star Jams. from ( I think 1941)

Benny Goodman
Tommy Dorsey
Charlie Christian
Art Berstien
Buddy Rich
Harry James
and the cream of the jazz/Swing world

I'll have to dig out side B.

Ive heard this on many CD's Lp's over the years but none have the crisp clean sound of the guitar on this one!!

Which is why I endeavor to do these from "not very clean/mint" 78's, I Hate it when some "engineer" thinks he will remove all the noise "dulling" the instrument's in the process.

This from wikpedia

''Metronome All-Stars 1941: "One O'Clock Jump"/"Bugle Call Rag", recorded by Harry James, Ziggy Elman, Cootie Williams, Tommy Dorsey, J. C. Higginbotham, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, Toots Mondello, Coleman Hawkins, Tex Beneke, Count Basie, Charlie Christian, Artie Bernstein, Buddy Rich.

Harry James - Get Happy Columbia

Another one with a "lost" Scan

I wish I could get a better disc of this one (again a junk shop find) A bit worn. and as you can hear if you take too much "away" from it (see TMNR version) it's a little flat.

The weird distortion isn't my "declickers" going overtime ( a sound i hate on other peoples restorations) It's on the disc.. I'd say heavy steel needles!!

Its like all the other "band's within a band" at the time, But this one kinda rocks. and WHAT a trumpeter!!

Ive always Liked Max Geldray's version from the last of the 7th series of "Goon Shows"
another one I like is Nelson Eddy's version from a 1946 (bootleg) Radio disc.

Now I don't Understand this disc at all!!.. I'ts called "DISCRIPTIVE" on the label. thinking (before treansfering) it was the "real" thing. I was kind of interested.. as it must have originated at the start of the "great War"
What it turns out to be is a bit of Propaganda aimed at allying the fears of all those at home.. Could this be the first real war propaganda to be recorded?

Dont Expect a sonic masterpiece! Ive have found (in a antuique store) some very cheap Pre Electric discs with some mighy nice labels. (this one is boring though)
and of course these must have been played to death (Gawd knows why!!)

Thanks goes to Luis for the below Info!

It was labelled as Peerless Quartet (as Prince's Band and Columbia Male Quartet), USA catalog number A-2354 (same matrix numbers as yours) and was recorded august 10, 1917 (Departure) and august 11, 1917 (Arrival)

"I see Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa and Charlie Barnet...plus another man holding a sax standing between Miller and Barnet.

and he or she is quite right too! i had no idea when i posted it as is was just going though masses of miller pics ive collected and did not look at the photo at all i was looking for the date it was taken!!.. anyone know what happened on the 4th of march 1940?

I have another pic of some of these guys (add Woody Herman and Sammy Kaye) breaking Champagne bottles over millers "bandstand" onstage the pic i scanned says 13th Jan 1941 !

From a 16inch vinyl Grace Gibson Orange Labeled (from memory) Disc.
I Also Have Episode 2 (on the other side)

I left a little "Noise" in as it seriously started to "Mud Up" the voices and the Ambeince of the recording trying to remove any more. (although most Aussie Radio shows I've ever heard (some thousands) that have been worked on by the cloth eared folk at the National Sound Archive sound very underwatery)

This is the complete unedited 48 Min version. A 30 Min version was aired. In fact this is the Only Ampol show that exists unedited!!.

From a Broadcast on radio Recorded by Myself. There was clicks and pops and general noise which I removed. the 1st part (the Ampol Intro) Seems to come from a diffrant Disc and sounds far worse than the Main Program. even when other People "uhem Transfer" a Disc I can still work wonders..

The disc was Badly worn. It looked like several attempts had been made in the past to Transfer it, all to Ill effect to the disc surface. but it Scrubbed up pretty well. I have some more of these.

And remember I NEVER attempt to take away ALL the "Noise", doing this DESTROYS the ambiance of the performance.. I could make a Really Clean version very easily .. but I'd hate it.. (underwater sounding , no Top end, etc etc.. and I leave that to the So-Called "restoration experts")

Dad's Army Film

This Movie started life as a filler in the "Dad's Army" Production I was recently involved in (in more ways than one!)
The scripts Mum's Army , The Godiva Affair and The Deadly Attachment were the "episodes" we performed.
Now there was a bit of a problem with the "Godiva Affair" This required the cast to have a very quick costume change. It would mean we had to get from our "Morris Dancing" gear into our "Uniforms" in the space of 20 odd seconds. now as this was impossible (the leather "leggings" take more than 30 seconds to put on alone) Myself and the Director Brian Lowe came up with an idea. we could cobble together some funny home guard footage and project it onto a screen to "cover" the costume change. all well and good. but the problem, how to get 6 odd Min's of Real 40's Home guard footage into some kind of shape to impress an audience for 6 Min's. The first hurdle was to get the films, for this I downloaded and already had some 40ish documentaries on Britain at war etc. most of these programs only had a few seconds at most of film to use. after a week of playing around with the timeline I accidentally pulled a bit of vision of gas masked dancers into a part of the song "the king was still in London" (which was used in numerous Dad's Army Episodes. the point that i had dragged the vision and inadvertently pressed play. the "cocktail piano" part had just begun and you see these dancers waltzing around in gas masks.
Well this was it. I thought it so moving and funny at the same time i worked some 50 odd edits around this song and pieced together numorus other WW2 footage that we had a sort of mini movie. Now after i had made this the director had decided that we would drop the film as most could get changed in the short scene change and has written an extra scene to cover this. So for a short time the film was shelved (about one day!) In the end we placed the film at the Start of the entire show to give the audience a feel for the era and of course the first part of the film was taken from a George Formby film showing people "joining up" to the home guard. this we felt explained what we were doing! as the scripts make no mention on why there is a home guard or why Cap Mannering is a bank clerk AND a Captain,

So there we have it.. towards the end of the "Edit" a Cast member kindly lent me a film which had more complete versions of some of the bit i already had inserted into our piece so another edit and it was done.. the next part was to make a "king Geroge" bit at the start. you know when you see an old 40's film and people "stand for the king" at the end or start of a film. well we were promised some real film of this but (as we knew at the time) the guy was all bluff and wind. and i had to "roll my own" so at the start you see a Mock "stand for the king" film which came from Pics from Google and some you tube flags!!. we had the entire audience standing for this (umm) most shows!!.
The film went down well with audiences, (I was surprised) as I had intended to make "Mock" Newsreels (like in the 1st series of Dad's Army) with our cast on location digging for victory etc and then making it look old (adobe after effects!)
The Director want to put the show on again in a year or so. and a new film will be made this time with more comedy and some "location shots' of the cast to jazz it up a bit.

Remember ALL the uniformed men you see in this film are REAL home guard men from the UK between 1940-44. that's why i needed loads of "doco's"

The first part is me advertising this blog.. this was NOT I repeat NOT shown.. Ive only added this as i intend to put this up on youtube and i wanted to plug this site.

I would post pics of the "Cast" but seeing the show is over I can't really get their permission (sorry)

The reviewer Ken Longworth was convinced we had a real 40's film and said so in his review. a week later he found out I had made it all and this Appeared in the Newspaper!!

Its In DIVX format so you will need the appropriate Codex Installed to see it.
Not only can I Restore audio I can restore film and edit it as well.. But still I'm unemployed? weird ain't it.

Not only was I pike, I "lit" the set and designed all the sound effects and musical cues.

Lawson Haggart Jazz Band - Louis hot 5's and 7's

The Band of Bob Haggart and Yank Lawson blow some of Louis's early hits.

A great LP, some "new" interpretations of these classic numbers. plus an introduction by Pop's himself. (although you'll need to read the back of the record cover to "interpret" some of it!!
