RIP - Les Paul - The New Sound

We've had this one before, but in the light of the sad news of the great man's passing here's one of my Fav tracks from Mr Paul.

I have quite a few of his 78's.. they are mostly on CD and sound superb so there's not much point of posting any more (is there?) Remember If you know of someone with a stack of 78's Tell me!! All I want to do is transfer them and present them here!, Im in no way a "Collector" all I want is to hear the music I love, not to ferret away dusty discs in a dark corner unloved.. that's the biggest crime to music, having all these great sounds hidden!. Hell I don't even have much of a collection! (can't afford any now sadly....) so If you know someone who wants some discs transferred for FREE, expertly too, just ask.

Les Paul created the "multi track" method of recording years before anyone else thought of doing it.
not only does he play all the Guitars but he uses different speeds to layer a true masterpiece,
I quite like the instrumental Les Paul cuts. This one again from a "played to death" CAPITOL pressing.

Benny Goodman - Bach Goes To Town (Templeton) HMV OA030702

Here's one I "missed out" in uploading last year.
This track "ignited" my passion for some of the Obscure tracks of Benny Goodmans band.
I first heard it on a 3 "cassete" set from readers digest I bought second hand in the late 80's.
of course for many years I wanted to hear the 78 and by pure chance I found a worn copy and hey presto here it is.

what suprised me with this track compared to the versions issued on LP,Tape and CD. Is the Dynamic Range. this track on Re-Issues suffers from to much compression. IE compression makes the loud parts soft and the soft parts the same "level" as the loud bits. so when the band really "goes to town" it hasent the Impact when playing it from the original 78.
This Ive corrected! and what a number. the small combo section is really "tight" and keeps it Swining!, Thaks Mr Goodman.

The song itself, well it's one of Benny's attempts to "Swing the Classics" in the mid to late 30's most big bands were digging out the old "scores" and finding ways to swing em up. most are good. some are dreadfull. but this track really has that "Bach" feel!
in the 60's 3 French guys (Jacques Loussier Trio) swung up Bach's music. they released 4 (from memory) albums, I Really Dig the first one. If you are interested they are called "Play Bach"

BTW, The Fake Stereo Version is quite good (with headphones) and clearly "seperates" some of the instrements !

Nat King Cole - That's My Girl CAPITOL

Nat king Cole in a Swingy mood with That's My girl. One of Nat's rarer recordings.
Its an uptempo number Written by Ray Ellington (yes That Ray from The Goon Show)
If you know of Ray Ellington's style of Arranging you will hear it in the "middle eight".
Ray also performed this song on a couple of Goon show's as well.

Again a rather worn disc ( I had 2 pressings to play with and each was as worn as each other!)

And I'm still experimenting with Photographing the labels from these discs, I've tried different lights, moving the light source around all over to get that pesky "gold" lettering of the Capitol and HMV discs. Oh and my flatbed wont scan em either!!.. any ideas?

Some (to me) unusual recordings from a opera singer coupled with a big band !!
Its Josephine Tumminia with the band of Jimmy Dorsey.
Ive been going though some of my 12 inch 78's which were relegated to the back of a cupboard as i though them uninteresting, well was i in for a shock when i spun this one. Its just too hard to explain but its very good! Again from my own collection of junk shop discs which are not by all means "perfect" pressings. Again 3 versions my "good" version, one with too much NR and one fake stereo copy.

Ward Leopold - Here's Hooey Regal Zonophone

A comedy disc now. From (I think) Comedians from Aussie radio.
Every time i see someones 78 collection I always come across several of these. It must have been the "must have" disc in the early 40's. Although some comedy from the 40's does suffer with age some of the material here is surprisingly fresh!

I also have the Coronation edition and Here's Hooey 2 as well for those interested and they are also on the 12 inch type of 78.
There is no "fake stereo" version of this as there was no point!

Ben Light - Perfidia Capitol

This is from the age of the cocktail pianist the likes of Carmen Cavallaro, Eddie Duchin, Frankie Carle and the list could go on.
This I assume was most likely recorded in the late 40's and its a surprising arrangement too.
Check out the machine gun speed of his playing!
This is one of my own discs that I've kind of played to death before i transferred it.
Oh and I don't have the disc on-hand to get a pic of the label so I've faked (rather shoddily) one

Again 3 versions Good - Too Much Noise Reductgion and a Fake Stereo taken from the GOOD version. and Please Play with your treble settings too get the "best Sound" and I State again that i restore these discs from "mostly" beaten up 78's that i bought at a aution 10 years ago. they are commercial pressings and have been (for all intesion purposes) been played a lot and have heaps of noise!!)

Tommy Dorsey - Boogie Woogie

Although the Piano style boogie woogie style had been knocking around for years it was the band of Tommy Dorsy and of course Sy Olivers Arraignment of Pinetop Smith orig Tune that had it all happen again in the early 40's.. This is one of the TD band's Seminal hits. but always the transfers have been over compressd with the dynamic range squessed out of it.. have a spin with this transfer. Remember its from a 1cent 78 bought about 20 years ago at a junk type shop. Not the kind of disc you would take for a "proper" Transfer. but her the full dynamic and surprisingly the frequency! now hear for the 1st time the guitar strumming away. !

Not much to say about the talents of Steph and Django. I'll let the music speak for itself.
I've always liked the hot club recordings but always with the a little goes a long way,
most transfers of the hot club recordings are pretty sub standard. yep i even hate the mosac ones of a few years ago. (good clean preessings they had to work on by the sounds of em but WAY toooo much NR)
so here is a well played disc found at a junk shop years ago that had spent most of it's life without a sleeve. BUT STILL. it beats the rest it its aural brillance.
and the stereo fakery ive made up works well


Oh and remember that I restore these with the Treble on my rig turned way up. so if you want to "hear" more out of these and all my recording play around with your treble control!
